Another memory Caroline has is of driving to the Bronx during the Depression to visit her grandmother and uncles. Because the trip was so long, the parents had removed the back seat of the car and the three kids slept on the floor. The car stopped at a checkpoint so that officers could search for "corn," and the children woke up confused about why anyone would think they had corn in the car and why anyone would care if they did. | |||
