Caroline remembers that as a time when her mother cooked and her father worked the counter in a diner while she was looked after by someone named Victoria.
Notice the sign above the doorway in the back of the room advertising Newman's Jewelry. The Newmans were good friends who, we were told, were landsmen (from the old country).
