Here's a cute story from my mother along that same line: My mother and her brothers called their father Pop, short for papa, which was what children had called their fathers in the "old country." Lazer objected. He told Caroline she should call him Dad. She refused and said that he didn't look like a dad. He wasn't dad. He was pop and always would be pop. Lazer's response? "We are in America now. In America I am Dad!" Lazer never did get to be called Dad (he didn't sound like a Dad either, with his thick Yiddish accent) but it was pretty clear to everyone that he wanted to be an AMERICAN father.
