Talk:Journey to America
It's difficult to imagine now the challenge of the journey from Bobrinets to the U.S. in the early years of the 20th century. First, the traveler had to get from Bobrinets (most difficult for the young men who were fleeing the required military service) to the point of departure, usually Hamburg, Germany. The distance of about 1,000 miles or more, depending on the route, and the challenges of crossing borders from the Russian Empire through Poland and/or the Austro-Hungarian Empire to the German Empire -- countries at the cusp of war and with negative views of Jews -- appears daunting. Whether traveling by foot, hay wagon, or train, the possibility of danger must have been always present.
